Our Story
John, Kari and their two daughters, Carleigh and Rylynn own and operate Thompson Farms. It is a family run farm that dates back to 1928 when John’s grandparents, Samuel and Ruth Thompson purchased a 44 acre farm in New Castle, Scott Township, Lawrence County. This farm is still in operation and is where the majority of our alfalfa is planted and the original farmhouse that is currently being renovated. The alfalfa fields are harvested for hay and stored for winter feeding. The farm has expanded to include 136 acre property in Volant where our Katahdin Hair Sheep are pastured, lambing barns and John, Kari and the girls live. Also, at this property, we raise corn and soybeans that we use make our feed to supplement our feed program during lambing.
Since Katahdins are a hair sheep, they don’t have the amount of lanolin that is produced from a wool sheep. The lanolin is an oil and gives traditional lamb the strong lamb flavor. Katahdin Lamb is a milder tasting lamb and lower in cholesterol.
We offer several typical lamb cuts, such as chops, cubes, roasts, ground, steaks and a few specialty cuts such as bratwurst, snack sticks and Kielbasa. All cuts are 100% Katahdin Lamb.
Katahdins are out of season breeders. Which means they will lamb (have babies) is Spring and Fall. Therefore we have lamb year-round.
From April to October, you can find us at several area farmers markets. We also have an online store and delivery.
