Our Story

"LEAF does something uncommon by believing in, and relying on, the power of youth. Kids have unbelievable strength in both mind and body, but many young people are unaware because we never have a reason to access these parts of ourselves . . .I have gained an awareness of how the farm works and what it needs, being able to partner the youths' abilities with different tasks in a way that encourages growth of them both, and then leading them efficiently to get that task completed." - Dailah, Youth Crew Member The LEAF Project is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2013, whose mission is to cultivate youth leaders from diverse backgrounds through meaningful work in the food system. We do this by hiring 25-30 youth, ages 14-18, from across South Central Pennsylvania (Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, and Adams Counties) to run and manage our small-scale vegetable farm, our kitchen ventures, and develop their leadership skills. Our youth work together to feed their community while learning about their unique talents and how to work across differences.
